Third Flatiron, Green

Started at 6:36 am. Hiked pretty easy from Chautauqua up to the Third. Changed shoes, then took my time on the face, locating each of the eyebolts in anticipation of a moonlight ascent. Did two raps to get off. Heard Bill W and crew scouting the Regency/Royal Arch/Fifth route. And saw Tony K pass below heading up Green as I set up the second rap.

Continued up Green, stashing my pack a little ways up. Passed Tony and friend as they descended Greenman. Descended the same way.

Started at 4:35 pm. Goal was to mostly hike it today but to hike it hard. Felt good throughout. Quite surprised by my ascent time, given my gluttony and relative inactivity of late. 19 seconds off my best this year and 30 seconds off my PR.

Ran into Eric L at the trailhead and chatted with him a bit before starting out. Also saw Aron R's truck as I pulled in and passed him as he descended upper Amph. Saw more runners than usual on the trails today.

Morning After

Climbed the East Face (F7) of the Morning After with Bill W and Mark O. Bill led each pitch (4 pitches, I think). Mark and I followed on separate ends of our doubled rope. After bagging the arch that is the summit (over and under), we then downclimbed via the south ramp and the "peculiar flakes" (although there was a decent rap anchor at the summit).

Tony B also joined but opted for scrambles on the Eyes of the Canyon. Started at 6:08 am, finished around 8:39 am. Not a particularly fast outing, but the weather was perfect, so it was nice to just take our time this morning.

Only got three hours of sleep as I'd been at work until 1:30 am! Amazed that I got up for this.

Started at 5:57 pm. Hiked fairly hard for most of the ascent. Only ran a few sections. Had my head up on the lookout for bears after seeing a bear on Saddle Rock last week (I had missed the sign at the trailhead mentioning that a bear had been sighted at 5:00 pm this evening near the trailhead!).

Quite a change with the ladybugs at the summit. They had previously been isolated to the trunk of a single tree. Today, they were spread out around the summit area more - mostly in small groups on smaller tree branches but some on rocks as well. Since they were spread out, there seemed to be more, but probably not. Wonder if the recent wet weather had anything to do with them spreading out.

Worked pretty hard on the descent but not all out (19:47).
