South Boulder

South Mesa TH, Towhee, Shadow, South Boulder; down the same.

Started out not knowing if I'd go easy or hard. Didn't feel good starting out, so decided to take it easy. Unfortunately, there wasn't much in the tank today, so going easy didn't feel easy. On the descent, worked on moving my feet fast coming down Shadow, but didn't really run very fast.

Mesa Trail S-N

Ran Mesa Trail south to north solo. Pretty hot (started at 1:44 pm). Tried to keep the effort mostly easy, but the climbs never really feel easy, especially with the heat. Stopped at the water fountain on the Bluebell rd for 20 seconds or so to see if it was turned on. It was, but it just barely dribbled out any water...not enough to drink or fill bottles.

Green, South Boulder, Bear

With Tom K. Started at 5:56 am. From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; West Ridge, Green Bear, West Ridge, over to South Boulder; back to Bear; Fern, North Shanahan, Cragmoor TH.

Legs were tired from the start. Tried to push a bit near the top of Green, but didn't have much. Tom put a few seconds on me descending Green. I then barely hung on running up the West Ridge until we started the final steep climb. Here Tom pulled away until we ran into Kirsten coming down. Tom pulled away again after we continued on. I stopped to pull a rock out of my shoe just before we crested and headed over to South Boulder. I think Tom must've waited for me a bit, but he pulled away going up South Boulder again. And on the return to Bear. And he then just flew down Fern, putting probably a minute on me before waiting up, then putting more time on me on the upper Shanahan before reaching the Mesa. Hadn't really run with Tom before. Fast descender.

Bent, Carson, 13450, 13524

Started at the bottom of Wager Gulch. Mostly hiked, but jogged a bit, up Wager. Cleaned up a few course markings from the SJS50 above the Carson aid station. Got water just below Carson Saddle. Up Bent via the road. Down to the saddle where I soaked my feet. Ran into snow from the previous day as I started up Carson. Over Carson and over to 13450 and on to 13524. Went up around the NW side of 13524 to the summit and came down the perfect talus/scree trail traversing across the south face. Descended west from the 13450/13524 saddle on good game trails to the Cataract Gulch trail. Passed 3 adult elk and 4 small calves on the way down. Ran down the Cataract Gulch trail. Got water again somewhere along the way. Got to Sherman, then jogged/walked down the road back to Wager.

SJS50 pacing

Paced Mark O for the final 10 miles of the San Juan Solstice 50. I also walked up the road from Slum about a mile and back down (to "warm up") while waiting for Mark.

We jogged the initial downhill section from the Slum aid station. Then walked all of the climb. Mark wasn't feeling well on the climb (dizzy, very swollen hands, had to pee a lot but had trouble doing so). Thought I could get Mark to jog once we started down at the top of the climb, but he still was feeling miserable. We walked all the way down to the Vickers aid. Continued walking, occasionally jogging, below Vickers, until it really started descending. Here Mark managed to run consistently and did so all the way to the finish. I was very impressed that he kept the run going across town, as I wasn't able to do that when I ran this race in 2005. I think Mark was just under 3 hours for the final 10 miles, maybe 2:55.

Ran into Roger J during the race. Chatted with him at the finish, and he asked if I wanted to pace him at the Wasatch 100. Would be cool to do that. I'll be seeing him at Pikes again.

Also chatted with Jason H and Bill G after the race. Bill asked if I wanted to pace him at Hardrock for 30 miles from Grouse to Telluride if his current pacer isn't able to go due to injury. Heck yeah! I'm really hoping this works out.

Green (PR), Flagstaff

From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; spent a couple minutes on the summit; West Ridge, Ranger, Ute, Flagstaff summit; Flagstaff, Crown Rock, Gregory, Gregory TH.

Started at 6:48 pm. Wet from heavy afternoon rains. Still recovering from a cold that came on on Friday morning, so the PR was encouraging. Walked several times on the descents due to chest pain (!).

Bierstadt

With Jeff & Allison V. Started at 11:32 am! Ran pretty hard. Willows section was quite muddy. Continuous snow above 12???, but it was in pretty good condition for going up, excellent for coming down. Started in shorts and short-sleeve shirt. Strong winds and blowing ice pellets forced me to stop and put on pants and a long-sleeve shirt above 12???. Lost a couple minutes doing that, as I initially put my pants on backwards and had to fix that. After topping out, took a short break to eat, then dropped down 500-1000 ft and hiked back up to the summit with Allison (and Jeff).

0:00 - post where the initial trails from the parking lots merge
1:14:05 - summit
3:05 (approx) - finish (somehow stopped the stopwatch while I was on the summit - Jeff had this as our finishing time)

Bear Peak (PR)

Group time trial. Cragmoor TH, North Shanahan, Fern, Bear; down the same.

Pretty sure this was a PR from Cragmoor, as I've not usually run Bear from that TH in the past.

Chilled on top of Bear for a while. Stopped just above the trailhead on the way down, where we met Lori, Mia and Anya, and Lori headed out for a run.
