From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; down the same.
Started at 11:01 am. A bit of fresh snow overnight. Was in the teens at the start, but I climbed above the clouds, and the summit was sunny and warm with no wind. Took it pretty easy on the ascent, hiking most of it. Was pushing the descent a bit until I ran into Rex H and Caroline just above the Greenman/Saddle Rock junction. Stopped to chat with them for several minutes.
Right after that, a link came undone on one of my Microspikes. I stopped to try to fix it, to no avail, so I removed it and ran with one Microspike. Didn't care for that, so stopped again and tried to fix it again, again to no avail, so just put it back on. Ran a bit further and then removed it as I felt like I might break it even worse. So, ended up descending most of Saddle Rock and Amph with one Microspike.
Ran into Charlie N back at the trailhead. Nice to chat with him for a bit.

Hi, I am going to Boulder in a few weeks on vacation. I am from Denmark and would really like go up green mountain. I plan to do the run on my own and would like to ask you if there is anything I need to consider before going to the summit. And is the trail crowded or wont I see anyone.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great blog.
We've had very warm temperatures in Boulder for the past week or so, so a lot of snow has melted off Green. However, the upper parts of the trails still have a fair bit of snow.
ReplyDeleteIn the mornings, this snow can be pretty icy, and some sort of traction (Microspikes, screw shoes, YakTrax, etc) is pretty useful. On a warm afternoon, the snow can be soft enough to get by without traction, although I've still been using Microspikes on the upper part of the mountain even when the snow is soft.
Of course, this can all change in a few weeks. The warm weather looks to continue for a bit, so more snow may melt. But March and April are usually the snowiest months in the Colorado mountains, so it's possible we could get some big snow storms also.
Feel free to ping me as your trip gets closer for updated conditions if you want. I haven't been getting all my workouts up here recently, but I'm usually up on Green most days lately.
Regarding crowds, you'll usually see somebody else on the trails unless you're up there early in the morning on a week day. Some mornings I don't see anybody out. On a weekend, there will usually be a lot of people out there. The trails were quite busy today, and the summit was probably as crowded as I've ever seen it. That said, except on the summit, the trails themselves are never really crowded. Folks are generally pretty spread out.
