Pikes

Barr Trail.

Started at 6:23 am. Packed snow/ice up to where the Incline cutoff meets the Barr Trail. Then packed snow to Barr Camp. Above Barr Camp, still had a set of footsteps to follow until I was probably within a mile of the A Frame. Broke trail above there, but I was only sinking in about 4-6 inches most of the time. Nearing the A Frame, finding the trail became more difficult. Just past tree line, I completely lost the trail and just worked my way up until I hit the trail on the long traverse. Saw 7 bighorn sheep in this section. Followed the trail through the Cirque switchbacks until the long switchback back across the face. The far end of this switchback was covered by a snowfield, so at the start of this switchback, I headed up until I hit the 16 Golden Stairs sign. Briefly followed the trail here, but it was obscured by small snowfields, so I mostly headed up through the rocks to the summit.

I was quite surprised to have the summit all to myself. I fully expected the road to be open, the train to be running, and the shop to be open. Nope. Just me and the windless, frost-feathered, somewhat cloudy summit. Beautiful. Only stayed briefly before heading down.

Came down the same route until the long traverse. Part way across this, I headed straight down, initially on tundra/rocks, then occasional snowfields, then into the long, shallow snow gully which I followed down toward the A Frame, making good time. Detoured out of the gully above the A Frame, thinking I needed to head back left to meet the trail, but this was a mistake. Eventually worked back right and came out at the A Frame. Back on the trail, tried to jog a bit, but it was difficult with only my footprints to follow and the big pack until I reached the point where the previous footsteps had ended. Here, I managed to jog more down to Barr Camp. Here I stopped briefly to tend to a hot spot and chat with Teresa (Barr Camp caretaker) in the cabin. Jogged most of the way down, walking a few of the uphills. Passed Neal (Barr Camp caretaker) as he jogged back up to Camp. Then ran into Charlie Nuttelman and Tina as they were running up the W's.

Wore Microspikes the entire hike.

Coal Creek Trail & Singletree Trail

After Mia's birthday party in downtown Louisville, Lori dropped me off (3:29 pm) where the Coal Creek Trail meets Front St. Didn't know how far it was home but figured I'd survive. Turns out it's not too far at all. I hit McCaslin at around 22 minutes so continued under it and over to the Singletree Trail. Ran that to where it hits the dirt road, briefly looked at the new (but unopened?) trail across the road, and ran back. Past the little deserted house and across McCaslin, where I pushed super hard up the hill. Was glad to turn left onto the bike path before Rock Creek Pkwy. Under Rock Creek into Purple Park and followed the bike path adjacent to McCaslin. Pushed hard on the one little uphill here again. Where I normally cut over to McCaslin to cross the bridge, I decided to run down the gravel trail to Indiana and finish with one final hard push up the greenbelt. My original intent was to run hard up to the bench, but just as I made the turn, I decided I should run all the way to the top at Darley. I really should go run more little intervals on this hill. Tough finish.

Sanitas

Hiked up Sanitas with Mia and Anya. Started up the South Ridge just after 10 am. Mia hiked, and Anya rode in the Sherpani. Warm day. Just a minute in, Mia had to change to shorts. Mia did really well on the steep hike. She had to stop and rest lots of times, but I wouldn't let us take a long sit-down break (mean Daddy!). We topped out in just under 1:10. We hung out on top for a long time, eating snacks and climbing around on the rocks. Went to start down the East Ridge, and Mia needed a bio break, so we headed north into the woods. Mia did really well coming down the steep and rocky East Ridge trail, but when we hit the Valley trail, she started fading. Anya was asleep in the backpack, so I didn't want to stop for a break and risk waking her. Played a few games with Mia (following the leader, etc), promised her a Chik-Fil-A milkshake if there was no whining, and we finally worked our way down to the car. Probably would've been better off coming down the South Ridge. Right around 3:00 for the roundtrip.

BBMM

Started from Mt. Hope at 9:14 am. Ran sidewalks and Greenbriar, then turned off into open space at a gate and ran down to lower Big Bluestem. Big Bluestem up to Mesa. Mesa to Chautauqua.

I then ran the Baseline Trail over to the Gregory TH, but it looks like we were supposed to run Chautauqua to Ski Jump to Bluebell-Baird. Up Gregory, Ranger, and West Ridge to Green. Quite a few folks went up Green, but a number of folks bailed after this.

Down West Ridge and Green Bear. I think two guys, maybe three, went down Green Bear ahead of me. Initially, they stayed on the trail, but down lower the leader lost it in a few spots.

I stopped at the start of Bear's West Ridge trail to get water from the creek. Above, the trail looked unbroken, although Tom Masterson e-mailed BTR that he had been up this way the day before. There was a depression indicating his passage for some of the way up the West Ridge, but it didn't really help as it had apparently drifted in with the winds overnight. I ended up breaking trail solo, much of it knee deep and occasionally crotch deep in some drifts, until part way up the final steep climb when I ran into a large CMC group descending. Boy, was I glad to see them. The going up the last part of Bear was much easier after this.

At this point, I had no idea if anybody else was behind me. I thought I had heard voices a few times, but I was surprised that I hadn't been caught since I was breaking trail.

Anyway, on over to South Boulder. Past the Shadow junction, I could see only one set of footprints heading up South Boulder, and it looked like they hadn't come down yet. Sure enough, a ways up there I ran into two girls descending. They mentioned that they hadn't made it to the top, but I thanked them graciously for their track nonetheless. Turns out they had made a wrong turn a couple hundred feet below the top, heading too far left below the talus field. Following this part of the track was tough with lots of tree branches buried under the snow. Their track ended probably only a hundred vertical feet below the summit. Breaking trail from there to the summit was tough, as it was all crotch deep, with more buried downed trees, and then talus.

I opted to descend the trail, which meant breaking trail downhill for a few minutes. A couple of drifts here were probably the deepest snow of the day, but at least it was downhill. Quite fun actually.

At the top of Shadow, I ran into a number of runners, including Adam Massey, Megan (Baker), Mike (?), Jorge del Plata. Sounded like they were all opting to skip South Boulder. I got some nice props here as they mentioned that I was likely the only person completing the entire route. I continued down Shadow at a pretty good rate. Adam mentioned that he might run ahead of the others, so I thought he might catch up to me, but I never did see any of them again. Down Shadow, Towhee, Homestead, left on the Mesa, Big Bluestem, lower Big Bluestem, and back the same way we started.

Green

From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; down the same.

Started at 7:01 am. Lots of new snow this morning. About mid-shin on the upper part of the mountain, occasionally at the knee in drifts and on steeper slopes. The summit boulder was fun with all that snow. Lots of trees bending over the trail with the weight of the snow, mostly near the bottom of Amph. Not much running involved on this trip. Even on the down, running was a lot of work. Put my left leg into the deep hole in the talus on one of the final switchbacks below the summit, even though I was looking out for it! Oddly, the Gregory gate was closed, apparently just after that road had been plowed (!), so I parked in the pullout just down the road.

At the summit, it was gorgeous. Fresh snow, clouds everywhere, some snow falling. I didn't want to leave. I noted that my legs felt like I hadn't even run up the mountain. They felt great. South Boulder Creek run with Mia biking along

From Marshall Rd, South Boulder Creek trail to South Boulder Rd, east to the tunnel under South Boulder; returned the same.

Mia's been riding without training wheels for a few weeks now, and I've discovered that she now rides much faster. So, I've been thinking that maybe I could start doing runs with her biking along. While this trail is dirt, and Mia hadn't really ridden on dirt yet, I figured this might be OK since this trail is so smooth and the terrain so flat. I'm thinking that running our neighborhood with her biking would be difficult right now because of the hills, narrow sidewalks, intersections, etc.

This run/ride went very well for the most part and was a blast! Starting out, Mia probably could have pulled away as the trail seems slightly downhill, and I've got a bit of cold so started out slowly. I soon realized that there are lots of gravel sections on this trail that would be difficult for Mia with her smooth tires and limited bike handling experience. I guess it only took Mia getting almost sideways once but pulling out of it before crashing for me to realize this! Anyway, we had to focus on keeping Mia in the smooth tracks.

Things went really well all the way to the gate at South Boulder Rd. Here we got a drink and decided that Mia felt good enough to continue a couple more minutes to the tunnel under South Boulder. The tunnel held water as usual, so we turned back there. On the way back to the gate, Mia got caught in some gravel and crashed. I was right there and picked her up quickly, but the tears still flowed. No blood, though, and Mia quickly recovered, and we continued on. We stopped for a few minutes at the 36 bridge for a Rice Krispie treat. The rest of the way back went OK, but Mia's legs were getting tired, so I helped her along with some pushing a few times.

Overall, this run/ride went great and was an absolute thrill for me. I think Mia had a great time as well.

Green

From Chautauqua, Mesa, Bear Canyon, Green Bear, West Ridge, Green; down Greenman, Saddle Rock, Amph, Baseline.

Don't know if I've run this route before. Started at 6:22 pm. Felt a little hungry driving up to Chautauqua. Overcast and cool so I decided I didn't need to carry water. Started out and felt decent so decided to keep a somewhat hard yet comfortable effort going and see if I could run all the way up Green. Running up the "road" section below the Bear Canyon trail junction, three guys pointed out a bear just off the trail. I stopped briefly to check it out, then continued on. Running up Bear Canyon, I saw that part of the trail is being re-routed away from the stream to the north. Looks like a nice new section. Just past the steep steps near the bottom of the Green Bear, I spooked three grouse (?). Kept the run going up Green Bear and saw three deer just below the West Ridge junction. I was amazed at how comfortable I felt running everything. Legs and breathing both were reasonable, although I started feeling it near the top of Green Bear. Tried to not ease off too much on the flattish section of the West Ridge before the big steps begin. Managed to keep the run going without really doing any "sissy stepping." Made the last left turn and still had power to kick it up a notch to the summit boulder, which I ran/scrambled quickly. Was elated with how the run up went.

Hung out on top for about 10 minutes enjoying the sunset and some quiet time. Perfect evening up there. Started down and decided to take it easy. Well, my legs had some say in the matter. I guess I really had worked pretty hard on the climb. Jogged easy down to Greenman Spring, pushed a bit more on the smooth, flatter section over to the Saddle Rock junction. From here, it was getting quite dark, and I started walking. And I started feeling wasted. Hands started tingling. I was still moving fine, but my legs were really feeling fatigued. Descending the section below the First Flatiron trail junction, I sort of rolled my left ankle (no pain or injury) and went down in a heap on my right side. Sort of a slow motion fall with no damage done, except that I was a filthy mess. Got up, dusted off, and continued down, feeling even more trashed. Gimped my way down to the Amphitheater trail. A short ways down, I had to sit down. Legs were miserable. My balance was occasionally off. Walked a bit further and stopped to sit again just above the Amphitheater. Continued down, made the turn onto the Baseline trail, and stumbled my way back to Chautauqua. Hopped in the car and called Lori to tell her why I was running late and that I needed to get some water from the ranger station and sit for a bit to recover. Just stopping moving, then getting a little bit of water, had me feeling much better. A mini-epic on Green Mountain!

Green, Bear, South Boulder and more

From Chautauqua, Baseline, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; West Ridge of Green, Green Bear, West Ridge of Bear, Bear; over to South Boulder; down Shadow and Old Mesa to Eldorado Springs; took the trail from town up to the Fowler, east on Fowler, Spring Brook Loop North (clockwise), Doudy Draw up the hill, Flatirons Vista South, Greenbelt Plateau TH.

Started at 11:39 am on a fairly hot day. Lori and the girls dropped me at Chautauqua, and I planned to run over the peaks and then home. Started out going easy and took it easy up Green. Took it easy down to Bear Creek, but then upped the effort a bit as I tried to run most of the West Ridge until the steep finish. I did end up walking a bit before the final climb, though. Scrambled up and down the west face then over to South Boulder. Was feeling pretty beat on the climb up South Boulder. Down Shadow to the Old Mesa. Old Mesa was really overgrown. I was worried about stepping on a snake, poison ivy, rocks hiding under the grasses, etc. Really would like to see this become an official trail and see some maintenance. Dropped into Eldorado Springs and filled up the water bottles (a quarter for a gallon).

Headed east through town looking for the trail that leads up to the Fowler. I walked past it once but eventually found it. It's so close to a couple of houses that it feels weird going through there. Across the canal, then left at the junction and climbed up to the Fowler. Cleaned out the shoes here, then jogged east and south to the Spring Brook/Goshawk junction. Took the Spring Brook North following the loop clockwise. Decided here that, feeling the heat, I wouldn't be jogging all the way home. Called Lori as I crossed the mesa and asked her to pick me up in an hour at the Greenbelt Plateau TH. I was thinking it was still 7 miles home from there, but I think it's only 5. Took Doudy Draw up the hill, walking almost all of it, then turned right/south onto the Flatirons Vista South. Wanted to do this as I hadn't done it before. Pretty nice, in the trees, kinda like some of Goshawk and Spring Brook. Struggled running this, though. Came out above the Flatirons Vista TH and jogged over to and across 93 to the Greenbelt Plateau TH. Sat down in the shade of a car for about 10 minutes until Lori arrived. Hot and pretty beat!

Longs - Keyhole

Started at 4:31 am. Took the initial shortcut trail. Hit the main trail, then took the shortcut at the next switchback by the creek. I lost this trail at some point (still dark) but eventually popped out on the long flat section. Decided to skip the shortcut before the next creek crossing since I figured I'd lose it in the dark. I crossed the bridge over the creek, continued through a right switchback and a left switchback. Here I missed the shortcut trail up to Jims Grove in the dark. I could've turned back and found it, but there were other hikers there, so I just continued on the main trail up to the junction with Jims Grove. Here I took the Jims Grove trail until I hit the main trail again. I faced a pretty strong headwind as I popped out of the trees. Turned right on the main trail, through Granite Pass (where I pulled on a long sleeve shirt), and up the switchbacks into the Boulderfield (stayed on the switchbacks). Felt strong running to the privy sign. Up to the Keyhole where the wind was really ripping...until I was just a few seconds past the Keyhole. On the Ledges section, I took a lower, slabby traverse where the trail goes high. This worked nicely. Really no snow to deal with on the Ledges or in the Trough. Still a bit of snow in the upper Homestretch, but I really didn't have to do much to avoid it. My 30th ascent of Longs!

Down the Homestretch and Narrows quickly. Made pretty good time in the Trough with nobody coming up below me. Finally ran into some other hikers as I started back across the Ledges. Took the slabby traverse again when the trail went high. Back to the Keyhole. Running down the talus back to the flats of the Boulderfield, I noticed lots of folks stopping to stare like I was some sort of freak. I really wasn't moving that fast. Hit the Boulderfield and followed the trail out, but I cut over the north shoulder of MLW when there weren't any hikers nearby. Jims Grove trail again. Jims Grove shortcut. Kept my eyes open for all left turns off of this and managed to stay on it until popping out on the long flat section. The key here is that the trail kinda cuts across left more than expected rather than going more steeply downhill. Screwed up the turn off of the long flat section and lost some time in the woods. I think turning off before the Goblin Forest junction was my mistake, as I think I ended up crossing over that trail. Eventually popped back out on the main trail at the switchback by the creek. Took the lower shortcut trail where I took a minor fall while looking for a shorter shortcut. Oops.

Started with flashlight and water bottle in hands. Long sleeve shirt around the waist. Nathan pack with 3 Gus, balaclava, gloves, cell phone, whistle. Occasionally put the hand bottle into the pack.

Hardrock 100 pacing and volunteering

Paced Jennifer Roach from Grouse Gulch (42.1 mi) to Ouray (56.5 mi). Left Grouse at 11:14 pm Friday night and arrived at Ouray at 6:21 am Saturday morning.

Backpacked into the Putnam aid station on Saturday morning. I started out on the Colorado Trail from the Little Molas TH around 9:00 am and arrived at the aid station about 1:25 later.

While at the Putnam aid station, I hiked/jogged up and down the trail above the aid station quite a few times.

Backpacked out from Putnam to Silverton, following the course. I left the aid station at 8:20 am, arrived at the South Mineral Creek crossing around 9:40 am (?) and arrived in Silverton at the finish line at around 10:05 am (?).

Longs - Keyhole

Started at 7:58 am. Took the initial shortcut trail. It was in pretty rough shape from recent rains. Hit the main trail and stayed on it through a right switchback and a left switchback rather than take the shortcut. Now on the long flat section, I slowed looking for the shortcut before the next creek crossing that Bill and I had come down last year. It was further along than I anticipated, but I found it and took it. I followed it initially but lost it after crossing a small stream. A trail had continued up the stream before I crossed it, but that seemed to be going too far to the north. I ended up just heading up, trending left, until I hit the shortcut trail to Jims Grove. This took me directly to the privy where I headed hard left/south to come out of the Grove to the Jims Grove trail. Followed that up (without shortcutting) to the main trail below Granite Pass. Followed the main trail to Granite Pass and up the switchbacks to the Boulderfield. I stayed with these annoying switchbacks for the most part but did shortcut just a bit when the trail became a stream in a few spots.

Through the Boulderfield to the Keyhole and along the Ledges beyond. For the most part, really no snow and ice to deal with until about 50 yards before the Trough. I tried kicking a few steps in the snow to work my way up to the rocks above, but the snow was really firm. So, I stopped and put on my Kahtoolas while chatting with another fellow (he turned back here). I then took a low traverse to the Trough and climbed up on snow. About 2/3 of the way up, the snow ended for a bit so I removed the crampons. When I hit snow again, I went left onto the slabs which I followed to the top of the Trough. Across the Narrows which was essentially snow-free except for some patches up high which were out of the way. The Homestretch still had a pretty good snowfield in the upper half. I avoided it by scrambling up further to the right than normal. A touch trickier than the normal route.

Descending the Homestretch, I stayed closer to the normal route, still avoiding the snow, which was quite wet/verglassed and slippery. Took my time here. I decided to descend the right side of the Trough on the slabs/rock. Right near the top, I stepped on a patch of black ice on a slab. Fortunately, I didn't fall down the slab and just smacked my hand on the rock, bruising my palm. Descended very cautiously after that. Took a higher traverse across snow with good steps back to the Ledges. Back through the Keyhole and the Boulderfield to Granite Pass.

Left the trail at Granite Pass to run the ridge over Battle Mountain and over to Pine Ridge. Topped out on all of the major bumps along the ridge. From the furthest point, I then made my way back toward Pine Ridge, which I was thinking I'd follow all the way down. I had to traverse high to skirt some snowfields before I could drop down toward the ridge. Snowed a bit on me here. As I neared the ridge, it started to look less and less appealing; ie, a nasty bushwhack. After bushwhacking a ways down, I decided to give up on the ridge. It looked ugly to drop to the right toward the main trail, so I opted to drop down to the left and drop down to the Estes Cone trail. The bushwhacking wasn't too bad doing this, and I eventually picked up a faint trail which I followed to the Cone trail (Eugenia Mine trail). Jogged this a bit further than expected back to the main trail and back to the trailhead.

BTR night run. With Chris G, Andy G, Charles D, Steve M. Started at 9:42 pm. Starting from the Glacier Rim TH, we jogged a bit but mostly hiked, regrouping a few times, until the saddle west of Caribou BM. We had considered going to "Old Baldy", but our altimeters were reading 11600ish (instead of 12300ish) at the saddle, so, figuring "Old Baldy" was still a ways off, we opted to top out on Caribou BM and call it a night. Beautiful evening with a mostly-full moon shining bright when not obscured by clouds.

Planned to go up Audubon, but an accident turned us around on the Peak to Peak just south of Ward.

With Tom K. Started at 5:56 am. From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; West Ridge, Green Bear, West Ridge, over to South Boulder; back to Bear; Fern, North Shanahan, Cragmoor TH.

Legs were tired from the start. Tried to push a bit near the top of Green, but didn't have much. Tom put a few seconds on me descending Green. I then barely hung on running up the West Ridge until we started the final steep climb. Here Tom pulled away until we ran into Kirsten coming down. Tom pulled away again after we continued on. I stopped to pull a rock out of my shoe just before we crested and headed over to South Boulder. I think Tom must've waited for me a bit, but he pulled away going up South Boulder again. And on the return to Bear. And he then just flew down Fern, putting probably a minute on me before waiting up, then putting more time on me on the upper Shanahan before reaching the Mesa. SJS50 pacing

Paced Mark O for the final 10 miles of the San Juan Solstice 50. I also walked up the road from Slum about a mile and back down (to "warm up") while waiting for Mark.

We jogged the initial downhill section from the Slum aid station. Then walked all of the climb. Mark wasn't feeling well on the climb (dizzy, very swollen hands, had to pee a lot but had trouble doing so). Thought I could get Mark to jog once we started down at the top of the climb, but he still was feeling miserable. We walked all the way down to the Vickers aid. Continued walking, occasionally jogging, below Vickers, until it really started descending. Here Mark managed to run consistently and did so all the way to the finish. I was very impressed that he kept the run going across town, as I wasn't able to do that when I ran this race in 2005. I think Mark was just under 3 hours for the final 10 miles, maybe 2:55.

Ran into Roger J during the race. Chatted with him at the finish, and he asked if I wanted to pace him at the Wasatch 100. Would be cool to do that. I'll be seeing him at Pikes again.

Also chatted with Jason H and Bill G after the race. Bill asked if I wanted to pace him at Hardrock for 30 miles from Grouse to Telluride if his current pacer isn't able to go due to injury. Heck yeah! I'm really hoping this works out.

Started in shorts and short-sleeve shirt. Strong winds and blowing ice pellets forced me to stop and put on pants and a long-sleeve shirt above 12???. Lost a couple minutes doing that, as I initially put my pants on backwards and had to fix that.
