From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; down the same.
Started at 6:51 am. Knew before starting out that this would mostly be a hike. Just couldn't get the legs going. That's OK. I had plenty of days like this earlier in the year training for Hardrock.
At the trailhead, there was a sign indicating that a mama bear with two cubs had been sighted in the area yesterday. I was on the alert initially but forgot about it probably half way up Amph. On the way down the Saddle Rock trail near the 1st/2nd Flatiron trail junction, I heard and then saw the bears just below - right on the trail at the wooden "boardwalk." I stopped and just waited, as the cubs had already run down into the adjacent ravine and the mama had moved off the trail. I looked to traverse the hillside above the trail, but it looked nasty, so I just waited a bit more. I saw the cubs walking away on the other side of the ravine, but the mama was still by the trail. I took a few steps down the trail, and the mama turned down into the ravine. I waited until I saw her climbing out on the other side of the ravine, then boogied on down the trail. Awesome to see bears out there! I think this is the third time I've seen bears on a run this year.
