First Flatiron

Started at 6:24 pm. From Chautauqua, hiked pretty easy up to the base of the First (17:47). From the base, I hiked up to the right, under the fallen tree, to the easier start on the north side. Changed shoes then started up. Climbed the East Face Gully. Sort of got onto the right wall of the gully for a bit when the gully looked smoother and more polished. Not sure it was any easier where I went, though. Got back into the gully after a bit and worked my way up to the last (easy) exit option on the left before reaching the North Arete. A bit of trickier scrambling leading up to this exit. Exited the gully there, up past the Route Junction Knob, and on up to the North Arete. Followed that to the top (about an hour). Rapped off. Then jogged down (1:31:17).

Lots of crampon scratches in the gully and on the rock leading up to the gully. Folks have obviously been hitting the ice on the route over the winter.

Was shocked to see a dude riding a mountain bike up the Chautauqua trail on my way down. Not sure if he was clueless or just a rebel. My guess was the former.

Pikes

Nice day to get a May ascent for The Grid.

Started at 5:08 am. Wore my Nathan pack (wind shell, balaclava, gloves, Microspikes, empty water bottle, space blanket, Spot, way more food than I ate, etc), carried a hand bottle, and tied a shirt and pants around my waist.

Legs felt dead from the start. Jogged a bit of the W's, but just couldn't keep that going, so mostly hiked. Jogged on and off up to Barr Camp, but mostly just the flat and downhill stuff. Filled up and treated my hand bottle at Barr. Jogged almost nothing from Barr up to A Frame. Snow started some distance below A Frame (1/2 mile, 3/4 mile?) but was firm/packed so not a big deal. Left the trail at tree line and headed straight up. Much more snow above tree line than when I was up on 3/2. Unfortunately, the snow wasn't completely firm, so I was sinking in a bit (just a few inches, not much postholing) and thus tried to avoid the snow for the most part.

When I hit the Barr Trail on its long traverse over to the Cirque, there were good footprints in the snow on the trail, so I opted to follow it up. After the Cirque sign and a few more switchbacks, ran into another snowfield. From here, I followed steps/tracks up the snowfield to the summit area, topping out maybe 50 yards south of the Barr Trail. The wind was ripping on the summit. Ran over to the highest point, then popped into the summit house. Nice and warm in there. The employees were setting things up for the day. Filled my hand bottle. Considered buying a candy bar but ate a granola bar that I'd carried, then started down.

Cautiously descended the snowfield. Then stuck with the snow rather than the trail back over to the Cirque. Then mostly dry ground straight down to the A Frame. My goal for the descent from here on was to run everything but not beat myself up too bad. My descent on 3/2 had crushed me. Felt like I was running super conservative compared to the PPM but I was flying compared to 3/2.

Filled up both bottles at Barr and carried both in my hands. Only treated one, the other was for dumping on myself. Since I had to give the treated bottle 20-30 minutes, I ended up drinking very little of it. But I mostly emptied the other bottle on my quads and neck, even though it wasn't all that hot out.

Did manage to run all the little uphills on the descent, but they were a grunt. I did walk whenever I passed other hikers/runners heading up or down. That got to be very frequent in the W's. Pushed just a bit to get under 5:30 but not too hard.

Felt pretty good after finishing. Except for one toe. It was painful for much of the descent, and I figured I'd end up with a decent blister. I stopped at one point to snug up my shoes to see if that would help, but I didn't want to spend the time putting anything on the blister. Turns out I got a small blister but also a purple/black toenail. Grr! I think I've maybe had this happen once before. Not sure. Hoping I don't lose the nail.

So, felt that the ascent was pretty slow overall. Even when I was hiking, I didn't feel like I was working very hard. A few times, I forced myself to pick up the effort, but I'm sure I let myself back off again. Just didn't feel like working hard on this day. Fairly encouraged by the descent. Even more encouraged that my legs were almost totally fine the next day, and I had no soreness two days later.

Did not use the Microspikes. I think I ate 3-4 Gus, 2/3's of a pack of Shot Bloks, a granola bar, and maybe a half dozen Endurolytes. Drank about 65 ounces of water. Actually, 20 ounces of that was with EFS drink mix.

Ended up jogging/walking another few miles later in the day taking the girls down to watch the Superior Morgul Classic crit races. That was pretty exhausting.

Green

From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; down West Ridge, Ranger, (up) Greenman, Saddle Rock, Amph.

Started at 6:37 am. Legs felt pretty dead again from the start. Given that, I was very surprised to basically match my time from yesterday. Pretty happy with that type of time given the way I felt. Opted to get in a little more time and distance on the descent, so headed up Greenman from Ranger over to Saddle Rock.

Green

From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; down the same.

Started at 6:36 am. Didn't get enough sleep and was tired. Started out with the intention of just taking it fairly easy. Legs felt heavy and dull from the start. Did jog a few less steep sections, but was only able to do that because I was taking it easy. I'm sure I increased the effort as I moved up the mountain, though (given my time). I looked at my watch near the top of the log steps and was surprised to see 39 low, so I pushed really hard the last few switchbacks. Quite happy with my time given the easier start and the dead legs.

Talked with a guy on the summit that I'd seen on Green at least once last week. Joe has been using Green to rehab from a leg injury last year. Hope to see him lots more on the mountain this year.

Green

From Gregory TH, briefly up Amph, then back down; then up Gregory, Ranger, West Ridge, Green; down Greenman, Saddle Rock, Amph.

Started up Amph in the afternoon/evening. Super slow. Then saw Jeff V flying down toward me. Turned to run down to the TH to chat with him since it'd been a while since we'd chatted. After 10 minutes or so of chatting, I switched it up and headed up Gregory. Still slow and mostly hiking.

Stupid watch reset before I got the splits so these are from memory.

Green

From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; down the same.

Started at 6:00 pm. Pretty continuous snow on the trail above Greenman Spring. Thus took the upper part of the descent reasonably cautious. Picked things up below the Spring. Stopped to move a large rock off the traverse below the Greenman/Saddle Rock junction. Then just absolutely flew down the rest of the descent. Ran down Saddle Rock and Amph probably faster than I ever have. Wish I felt that "on" all the time, but this was just one of those days.

Green, Bear

From Devils Thumb, Bear Canyon road, Mesa, Bear Canyon, Green Bear, West Ridge, Green summit; down West Ridge, Green Bear; up West Ridge, Bear summit; down Fern, Mesa, Bear Canyon road.

Started at 5:50 am. With Bill W. Think this was pretty casual for Bill, but I was working pretty hard. I walked much of Green Bear while Bill kept the run going and topped out on Green a minute or so (?) ahead of me. Psyched that I managed to run much of Bear's West Ridge. Bill got ahead of me again here, but I caught up (more likely, he eased off) at the bottom of the final steep climb. We then hiked that together. Felt un-smooth as usual in Fern. Quads were pretty fried near the end of this run.

First Flatiron, Green

From Chautauqua, up to the First, on up to the start of Baker's Way, up Baker's Way and the North Arete to the summit, rapped off, directly up to the Northeast Ridge, Greenman, Green summit; down Greenman, Northeast Ridge, directly back to the First, down the First/Second trail, back to Chautauqua.

Started at 6:04 am. Headed up to the First with Bill W, Tom K, Bill H, and Maria P. Tom and I started up Baker's Way (after I changed shoes), then kept on going, while Bill climbed with Bill and Maria. Tom and I topped out and rapped off. I then stashed my gear, and we headed up Green. Topped out right behind Sheri W and Kirsten. Tom headed down Ranger/Gregory with them. I hustled down, gathered my gear, and caught up to Bill and Bill near the base of the First, then jogged down with them. Fun morning!

The Wickiup

From the I-70 exit, jogged roads until I was pretty much due south of the summit. Headed up and ascended via the south/southeast side, then the obvious weakness on the summit block. Mike G summit register from last fall. Returned more directly cross country on the southeast ridge until meeting up with the road again. 1:12:10 total time. About 0:40 to the summit.
