Dirty Bismarck (aborted)

Started at 1:46 pm. From home, up Bristol, McCaslin, shortcut by the house, Singletree trail, W Coal Creek, 66th, Cowdrey Draw trail, Community Ditch, Greenbelt Plateau, Greenbelt Plateau TH.

Wanted to try out a two-bottle waist pack that I had picked up at the GoLite sale this winter. It was driving me nuts just a few steps into the run. Just don't like the bounce and having to push it down all the time.

Ran OK out to 66th, but it was a chore. Tired from yesterday, I guess. And a bit of wind out of the north. Cowdrey was an absolute mess of snow and sticky, slippery mud. Wasn't having any fun. That, combined with the waist pack annoying me, combined with the fact that I was going to be later than I told Lori I'd be...I called for a ride. Ran hard on Greenbelt Plateau, after pulling off the waist pack, probably moving more quickly because I had a tail wind.

South Boulder

With Bill W, Mark O, Tom K, Kirsten, and Peter Graf. Started at 6:35 am from South Mesa TH. Mesa, Towhee, Shadow, South Boulder; down the same. Less than an inch of new snow. Lots of dry ground below that, but some packed snow and ice hidden under the fresh. Wore Microspikes the whole way.

Felt pretty good today. Hung back with Mark until the end of Towhee. At that point, Bill, Tom, and Kirsten were already out of sight. Peter, who was behind us, passed us and moved on quickly. I hung with Mark briefly but kept jogging as Mark walked and slowly pulled away. I couldn't see any of the others up ahead on the steep hill, but I kept on jogging comfortably. I ended up catching the others not far up Shadow as they were walking. Felt good to reel them in that quickly without much effort (they may have waited?). Walked the canyon, then jogged some from the saddle to the top.

I think I could get under 1:05 right now. Might have to give it a hard effort; although, the packed trail up Green is much more appealing than the rock/ice of Shadow right now.

Boulder Valley Ranch run

Started from Eagle TH at 1:48 pm. West on Eagle trail, stayed left on Eagle down the hill and past the small reservoir, stayed left on Eagle up the steep, muddy/icy hill, left onto Mesa Reservoir trail, left on Degge trail out to the dirt road and trailhead, right on Hidden Valley trail parallelling the road, left on Cobalt trail to the Boulder Valley Ranch TH, Left Hand trail out to the Left Hand TH and back, Sage (northern branch), Eagle, back to the Eagle TH. Muddier than I expected. Frustrated by not having dry trails to run on.

Waterton Canyon

Hike/run at Waterton Canyon with Lori, Mia, and Anya. We started out hiking together. Where a lesser road splits off to the left, Lori headed off jogging down that road. The girls and I followed hiking. We met back up with the main road, and Lori came jogging down not long after (she jogged about 30 minutes). I started jogging up the road (12:00 pm) and soon saw the 1 mile marker. Missed the other mile markers on the way up. Coming down, felt like I was working pretty hard. Pathetic that this was barely 8:00 pace downhill! Stopped running when I caught back up with the girls just a bit down the side road.

Coalton run

Started at 7:22 am from Big O Tires. Coalton to the Coalton TH, out to the last power pole, back to the TH, then home. Packed snow/ice from the top of the hill to the turn south. After the turn, it was drifted snow that had lots of messy footprints. Mostly firm, but occasionally sunk in a bit. Slow going on this section. Pretty good wind out of the west on this run as well.

Rock Creek Trail

Started at 3:26 pm from home. Down to Community Park, paved paths through the park to the Rock Creek Trail, under Rock Creek, short bit of soft, almost muddy, dirt/gravel, then packed snow, under Flatiron, paved path north of the mall, under Interlocken, behind/north of the shops there, under 36 at the Park-N-Ride, Midway briefly, short bit of cross country over the railroad tracks to 100th (?), north to Rock Creek Farm, Cradleboard Trail which was packed/unpacked snow, to Stearns Lake. Turned back where I hit the lake.

Was a bit sore from yesterday's run, but felt OK on this run. Managed to up the pace a few times (on the paved, non-icy sections) on the return which was encouraging.

Want to combine this with yesterday's route, continuing further east to 120th, to make an 18-mile loop.

Coal Creek Trail

Started at 3:06 pm from home. Greenbelt down to Indiana, up to Eldorado, bike paths to Purple Park, under Rock Creek, and onto McCaslin. McCaslin down to Coal Creek Trail. Had thought the trail would provide a run on dry ground, but it was snow packed for everything except for the few sections of pavement through the golf course neighborhood. Did a little extra through that neighborhood, as I missed the main path through there. Continued east until I passed under 287 and ran up to the right turn there back onto the trail. Turned back here. Felt pretty decent on the run back, even on the climb up McCaslin. Good workout.

Green

From pulloff on Baseline below the Gregory TH, access trail, Baseline, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; down West Ridge, Ranger, Gregory.

With Jeff V and Brandon F. Started at 10:34 am. Brandon started off fast, and I was off the back before we reached the Baseline trail. Regrouped at the start of Amph, but then they were off again. Jeff zoomed ahead, and Brandon gradually started coming back to me. I passed him just before the Amph/Saddle Rock jct. Worked hard all the way, running quite a bit of the trail.

Green

From Gregory TH, Amph, Saddle Rock, Greenman, Green; down the same.

Started at 2:10 pm. Good packed snow conditions except for a few sections (just below Greenman spring, wooden steps, and a few others) that had deep, messy footprints, probably due to drifting. Started down fast and decided to hammer the descent since all of the rough stuff was smoothed over by snow. Probably could've PRed for the descent if not for the few sections with deep snow that were too difficult/inefficient to run.
